Atari history part 3

One of the few games that ever really scared me was a game called

Rescue On Fractulas / (US:Behind Jagga Lines)

The first time that I ever met a Jagga was on a routine pick-up mission nearing its end , as I waited for the pilot I was startled into action when the Jagga started to hit my windscreen. (A bit like meeting a monster in the PC classic Doom for the first time), It scared me because I was not expecting it at all , and that was the first time I got into contact with a LucasFilm game (LucasArts today).
By now I was buying only from the companies explained above. Some brilliant software followed: Electraglide , Mr Do , Jet Boot Jack (another long term favourite) , blue max , Chop Suey , Carnival Massacre (first ROM cartridge game) , Bruce Lee (big favourite) , Pole Position (John Bennets borrowed ,cartridge I’ll get to him later) , Fort Apocalypse , Diamonds , Dropzone (Another time-killer) ,fire chief , kissin Kousins (first  digitised speech in-game ) , Ghost Chaser (Cool graphics) , Orc Attack (Second ever cartridge GOOD!) , Zaxxon , Zorro ,Decathlon. I Also purchased from a company called Activision , two games : Hacker , Great American Cross Country Road Race. Hacker came in box with no instructions what so ever and was an intriguing game that definitely got me hooked for months, And Road Race was played with a friend in stages to see if we could actually win a race , That was a cool game.

A close friend and I used to spend many day after school together just playing computer games for hours on end. His name was John Bennett He and I shared many Games with each other (swapped) , We always craved for a two player game that we could play simultaneously against each other there was only really two on the Atari then , they were Mig Alley Ace and Spy Vs Spy. Both games were great fun to play and we used to get the hump(not talking) with each other many times simply because of who won and who cheated etc.We particularly appreciated they booby trap element of the Spy series of games!

It must be strange to see how I reacted to my very first machine , But being young and inquisitive I learned a lot about how computers worked and what those early machines expected from me. I purchased magazines in the U.K such as Atari User (Of which I still have copies) and a monthly ‘magazine’ which had a tape in front of a piece of card , It was neat as the Atari had the ability to play audio sounds while a program was running or loading (rather like CD-ROM’s of today ;-) .

I used to sit down for days typing in listing from magazines (including C&VG) only for them not to work first time or the machine crashed during typing!.It should be noted that I was very young and that reflects in what was written above , As I was easily impressionable by early software. I grew eventually to appreciate good quality games via my Commodore 64 which is another section of this look back on old times.I finally ended my love affair with the Atari when they were stolen from my house during a burglary , I will never forgive those robbers , but I also would never have purchased a C64 either. I didn’t want to go ‘backwards’ to a ZX spectrum , although they had thousands of games , they just didn’t have enough colours or wizz-bang for my liking (Maybe I’ve just annoyed some people ,but who can forget the my machine is better than your machine arguments that were around then!). No it had to be coloured and have good sound , And a fateful day in late September 85 changed my life forever.See section on C64 for more.
